Anaesthetic Technologist

An anesthesiologist or anaesthetic technologist is an allied health care professional who provides patient care in an intensive care unit or an anesthesia-dedicated unit, primarily assisting with the monitoring and administration of general anesthesia used for surgery. Anesthesiologists perform diagnostic procedures such as the observation of the vital signs; making a diagnosis of the patient’s medical condition; prescribing and performing therapeutic procedures; and conducting physical examinations and ensuring that the patient’s surgical plan is appropriate. Other duties of an anesthesiologist include prescribing and administering medication, performing invasive procedures such as suturing and removing sponges, managing postoperative pressures, and preparing patients for postoperative surgery. They are also responsible for maintaining the equipment and setting conditions for operating rooms.

In addition to these duties, an anesthesiologist is required to educate patients, and other medical staff and physicians, about safety procedures and complications of general anesthesia. One way in which anaesthetists are certified is through the completion of a certificate program at an approved medical school or institution. Students must complete a minimum of two years of college courses and complete a board exam before becoming certified. The Anesthesiology Medical Staff Certification (AMCS) Program is one of the most comprehensive and best-known programs in the nation. This program has highly regarded faculty members and is designed for students who wish to become a licensed anesthesiologist.

Once an anaesthetic technologist has graduated from an accredited medical school and has been certified through the AMCS program, they can look for work in various healthcare settings. Hospitals and other medical facilities frequently seek out these workers when conducting surgery and administering anesthesia, as a high number of errors occur during this time. An experienced anaesthetic technologist is able to quickly assess a patient’s condition and administer the proper anesthesia for the procedure. An agency may offer employment with an onsite anesthesiology department or in a hospital’s general operating room.
